Sean C. Wood, CFP® AIF® CAP® began his career as a technology consultant serving Wall Street companies in New York City with the firm that is now Accenture. His career led to an unexpected IPO windfall during the now infamous “tech bubble” in 1999. At this point he and his wife sought professional advice on how to translate this cash into liberty and security for their growing family. After months of interviewing numerous financial advisors, insurance agents and stock brokers, they found that most were primarily interested in managing their portfolio or selling complex financial products. They were looking for a trusted advisor who would spend the time to truly understand their priorities and values and provide the advice and guidance needed to make wise decisions.
At this point, Sean started learning everything he could about investments and financial planning and in 2007 he enrolled in the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ program at Boston University. It became clear that the same disciplined and methodical approach that Sean had used with great success in technology would also demystify the complexities around helping people clarify their goals and plan for the future. Sean joined a large financial firm in 2009 and spent almost 4 years there being mentored by top advisors and completing training programs leading to the professional designations he now holds.
From the very beginning, Sean had a vision for eliminating the conflicts of interest that can arise when working for a firm that sells its own proprietary products. In 2013, Sean founded Stewardship Colorado to provide the kind of personalized financial life planning services that he and his family were looking for 14 years earlier. Stewardship Colorado is aligned with Stewardship Advisory Group which is an Independent Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) with a national presence and reputation along with a 30+ year history.
Sean is the Founder and Chief Steward of Stewardship Colorado, LLC and a Registered Representative with United Planners Financial Services. He completed his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY with a minor in Management and then a Masters in Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Sean enjoyed an exciting and meaningful career working in leadership roles with entrepreneurial technology firms based out of California’s Silicon Valley before founding Stewardship Colorado as described above.
Sean is very involved in his community and state and served as a volunteer firefighter in Evergreen for 22 years and still serves as a National Ski Patroller at Winter Park Resort. Sean is also very involved in non-profits and government, serving on the Jefferson Center for Mental Health board, the State Emergency Medical and Trauma Advisory Council, the Colorado Commission on Aging, and most recently as one of the nine members appointed by Governor Polis to the Colorado Secure Savings Plan Board. The Colorado Secure Savings Plan Board is tasked with providing a recommendation to the 2020 Colorado Legislature about a state-run retirement plan for the roughly 50% of Coloradoans who do not have access to a workplace savings plan.
The entire Wood family has a real passion for spending time together on whitewater trips and in 2017 the family spent 18 days rowing the full 277 river miles on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Sean also enjoys extended time in the backcountry and in August of 2019 spent 15 days riding his mountain bike from Waterton Canyon to Durango on the 500+ mile length of the Colorado Trail.
Sean also has a passion to better understand and address third-world poverty and has been to East Africa twice so far, most recently in the fall of 2014 on a trip to the South Sudan. The team conducted a week-long leadership seminar for community leaders in the Western Equitoria capital city of Yambio and there are plans for a continued partnership with Kenyan-based Life In Abundance.
